Less than two weeks to go before the convention starts! We of the Perfect Day Tent are looking forward to see you all in Avifauna, Alphen aan den Rijn, the Netherlands. We’re all set!
Here are some last tips for travellers from abroad:
It’s important to know that there are no ATMs in Hotel Avifauna or the immediate surroundings. If you need cash (euros) you will have to take a bus to the center of the town where the banks and shopping malls are.
It’s a better idea to get euros from an ATM or bank desk as soon as you arrive at a train station or airport.
With the euros you have just extracted from the money machine you can buy TOKENS at the hotel. During the convention we pay for consumptions with TOKENS. The tokens can be bought on registration at the hotel reception by credit card or cash (euros) or on the day and the spot of the festivities with cash only. A token = 2.50 euros (a glass of whine for example is one and a half token).
We had questions from people who are interested in museums to visit during their free time in Amsterdam or Utrecht. Our advice: buy your ticket online well in advance, especially for exhibitions much sought after, like the Anne Frank House , the Rijksmuseum and the Rembrandt House. Especially for American delegates, but not just for them: if you need help, our experienced friend Bill Oates has volunteered to assist you. Mail him.
Rumours were heard that there would be no fancy dress competition during this convention. Fake news! Fancy Dress is on Sunday night and there will be a Jury and there will be Awards: first, second and third prize.
HOW TO REACH AVIFAUNA?
First, to clear up any confusion: Avifauna is not a town or a city, it is the name of the Bird Park with Hotel included. This bird park is situated in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn (Alphen on Rhine).
Earlier, we posted travel tips for people who arrive at Amsterdam Internation Airport (Schiphol). If you go by bus from the airport to Avifauna (it takes less than an hour and the bus goes at least once, but often twice per hour), here is some additional information:
You have to take Arriva Bus 470 at Schiphol. Buy a direct ticket (with credit ot debit card, no cash) to Avifauna.
You see? You don’t have to buy a second ticket when you change busses, like we said before. You still have to change (ask the driver to warn you) but since the busses are owned by the same company, the one ticket to Avifauna will do (the bird park has its own busstop).
See also the Arriva travel planner at www.arriva.nl (with English and German versions, click upper right corner).
The price of the bus will be some 6 euros. A taxi will be far more expensive, about 40 or 50 euros, but will take more that one passenger!
You can book a taxi online. For example: https://www.taxi2airport.com/en
From Amsterdam Central buy a train ticket to Alphen aan den Rijn. Take an intercity train direction Vlissingen and change at Leiden to an intercity train to Utrecht. Get out at Alphen aan den Rijn (first stop). There are more possibilities, see NS travel planner.
From Utrecht Central buy a train ticket to Alpen aan den Rijn. If you don’t want to change, take an intercity train direction Leiden en get out at Alphen aan den Rijn (less than 30 minutes). There are more possibilities, see NS travel planner.
The address of Hotel Avifauna is:
Street and number: Hoorn 65
Postal code: 2404HG
Town: Alphen aan den Rijn
Phone: +31 (0)172 487 575
That’s all we can think of right now. Mail us for questions!
See you all soon!
